
For the first half of the 20th century, blackjack was a relatively simple, fast-paced game. Dealers operated and pitched the cards from their hands, using a single, standard 52-card deck. After a few hands, they reshuffled and continued. The casinos loved the game because it was incredibly popular, but dealing by hand was completely vulnerable. Since the deck was so small, observant gamblers could easily remember which cards had already been played. In the 1960s, a mathematical genius named Edward O. Thorp wrote the ultimate gambling book, which showed the world that by tracking the deck a player could completely eliminate the house edge. Las Vegas went into full panic mode; card counters were destroying their profits. To save their most profitable table game, they had to change the rules.
The answer to Thorp’s book was a physical piece of plastic. If small decks were vulnerable, they would multiply the cards. They combined six decks into one pile. But a human hand cannot hold eight decks of cards in their hand at the same time. They required a special holder.
While the multi-deck shoe slowed counters down, dedicated mathematicians eventually learned how to beat the multi-deck shoe as well. Today, operators use the final defense against advantage players: the Continuous Shuffling Machine (CSM).

Ultimately, the history of the shoe is a perfect example of the eternal arms race between mathematicians and the casino. From Thorp to modern casinos, the shoe proves that while players might occasionally find an edge the house will always evolve to guarantee they keep their advantage.
